What I Wish More Women Knew About Food, Aging, and Energy

If you’re a woman in your 30s, 40s, 50s (or beyond), chances are no one ever pulled you aside to explain how your nutritional needs evolve with age. Instead, most of us were raised on a steady diet of food rules and body shame—taught to eat less, shrink more, and fear carbs like the enemy.

I know this because I lived it too.

Even as a physician, I once believed many of the same myths: that cutting calories and skipping meals was the path to health… that the scale defined my wellness… and that if I felt tired or bloated, I just needed to “clean it up” or “do better.”

But at 50, everything changed.
That’s when I decided to go plant-based. Not because it was trendy, but because I wanted the best nutrition for my body. I wanted to be as healthy as I can be for the second half of my century. Plus, I turned 50 on 2020, and with disruptions in the supply chain caused by the pandemic, I wanted to be sure I would always have access to good nutritious foods.

Now, at 55, I have more clarity, vitality, and energy than I did in my 30s. In fact, just this past weekend I won a hula hoop contest featuring 3 pound weighted hoops, outlasting women much younger than me!

This is proof that you don’t have to chase youth, you just have to support the body you have right now, and it will support you back.

And today, I want to share what I wish more women knew about food, aging, and energy.

Let’s start here: Most of the nutrition advice women get is rooted in diet culture, not science.

From “low-fat everything” to “clean eating,” the message has long been:
Eat less. Weigh less. Be less.

But as we move through midlife, our bodies are not asking for less—they’re asking for more. More nourishment. More support. More grace.

What worked for us at 25 often backfires at 45.

Why? Because our hormones shift, our muscle mass declines, and our metabolism changes. If we continue undereating, skipping meals, or fearing whole food groups, we wind up in a vicious cycle of:

  • Low energy
  • Brain fog
  • Mood swings
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Slower metabolism

Let’s rewrite the narrative. Here’s what I’ve learned from personal experience and clinical insight:

🚫 MYTH: “Carbs make you gain weight.”

✅ TRUTH: Your brain and hormones need complex carbs like oats, sweet potatoes, and fruit for steady energy and serotonin support.

🚫 MYTH: “Eating less helps with aging.”

✅ TRUTH: Skimping on nutrients can speed up aging by weakening your bones, skin, and muscle tone. Strategic nourishment is key.

🚫 MYTH: “Plant-based diets are boring and leave you hungry.”

✅ TRUTH: A well-balanced plant-forward plate is full of fiber, healthy fats, and protein that keep you satisfied, energized, and hormonally balanced.

Here’s what your midlife body is really asking for:

  • Plant-based protein (to maintain lean muscle mass and boost metabolism)
  • Healthy fats (like avocado, walnuts, and flaxseeds to support hormones and your brain)
  • Fiber (to feed your gut, balance blood sugar, and support estrogen detox)
  • Colorful veggies (for cellular repair and longevity)

You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. Start small:

  • Add leafy greens to one meal a day (collards, kale, arugula).
  • Swap creamy dressings for tahini, avocado, or hummus-based sauces.
  • Make one plant-based meal per day — it adds up!
  • Prep a fiber-rich snack you love (like roasted chickpeas, energy balls, or fruit + nut butter) to avoid blood sugar dips.
  • Drink a full glass of water before your morning coffee to rehydrate and support digestion.
  • Try a meatless Monday (or any day!) — make it fun, flavorful, and family-friendly.

You are not failing because you’re tired.
You are not broken because your clothes fit differently.
You are evolving — and your nutrition should evolve with you.

At this stage of life, your food isn’t just fuel…
It’s medicine. It’s energy. It’s your future.
