I am Dr. Monique May, Board-certified Family Physician and Founder of Physician in the Kitchen™. Through my meal delivery service and best-selling book, MealMasters: Your Simple Guide to Modern Day Meal Planning, I help busy households enjoy healthy eating without impacting their hectic schedules. I hope your weekend was relaxing! Mine was fun AND busy: I worked, worked out, cooked, experimented in my “lab” (AKA my kitchen: click here to see a cool kitchen hack I came up with), and did a little home improvement as well. Whew! But I can’t let the weekend end without letting you know that today, September 13, 2020 is National Celiac Disease Awareness Day. Celiac disease affects about 3 million people in the United States, including both children and adults. People with this disease have an immune or inflammatory reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.
Common symptoms are:
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Bloating and gas
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Anemia
- Rashes
- Joint pain
To control these symptoms, people with celiac disease should avoid foods containing gluten, but it can also be hidden in common items such as:
- lipstick
- envelope and stamp glue
- prescriptions
- play dough

If you are looking for a gluten-free and vegan dessert option, be sure to check out my line of cakes here (pumpkin and sweet potato available for fall).
Have an AWESOME week!
