August is National Wellness Month—a perfect time to pause, reset, and ask yourself:
How am I really taking care of myself?
As a physician and someone who began her plant-based journey after turning 50, I can assure you that wellness isn’t about extremes or perfection. It’s about building small, consistent habits that nourish your body, calm your mind, and support long-term health.
This month, I’m celebrating wellness by sharing 7 everyday habits that help busy professionals—especially those of us 35 and up—feel more energized, focused, and grounded.
Whether you’re just getting started or looking to refine your routine, these actions will help you feel good now and age vibrantly later.
1. Start the Day Screen-Free for 30 Minutes
Instead of grabbing your phone first thing, give yourself 30 minutes to wake up on your own terms. Use that time to stretch, hydrate, journal, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of tea.
Why it matters: Reducing screen time in the morning lowers stress hormones and helps you set an intentional tone for your day. It’s one of the simplest mental wellness resets you can do.
2. Add Color to Every Plate
Eat the rainbow—but not the candy kind. The more colorful your meals, the more variety of antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber you’re getting.
Start with:
- Purple cabbage in your salad
- Orange sweet potatoes instead of white
- Red bell peppers in your stir-fry

3. Do a 5-Minute Body Check-In
Take a few minutes each day to pause and check in with your body:
- Are you holding tension in your shoulders?
- Do you need a stretch, a snack, or just a deep breath?
- How’s your energy?
This mini habit builds body awareness, which is key for preventing burnout and making healthier choices throughout the day.
4. Prep One Thing for Your Future Self
You don’t need to spend hours meal prepping.
Even chopping veggies, soaking beans, or cooking a batch of grains makes plant-based eating more doable during the week.
This small action reduces decision fatigue and helps you avoid last-minute takeout.

5. Unplug From “Noise” Once a Day
We’re constantly bombarded with news, notifications, and other people’s opinions—which can cloud our mental clarity. Choose a time each day to intentionally unplug.
That could mean:
- Turning off notifications during meals
- Stepping away from the news
- Setting boundaries around email or social media
Giving your mind a break allows your nervous system to reset—an underrated yet essential act of wellness.
6. Elevate One Daily Ritual Into a Mindful Moment
Wellness isn’t always about adding something new. Sometimes it’s about being fully present in something you already do.
☕ Turn your morning coffee into a moment of gratitude.
🚿 Let your evening shower be a chance to reflect, breathe deeply, or simply unwind without rushing.
These micro-moments of mindfulness help you anchor into your day!
7. Celebrate One Win Daily (No Matter How Small)
Maybe you took a walk instead of skipping it. Maybe you chose water over soda. Or maybe you said “no” to something that didn’t serve you.
Write it down. Say it out loud. Honor it.
Wellness isn’t a destination. It’s a daily practice, and celebrating your progress fuels your momentum.
This Wellness Month, Let’s Thrive!
You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul to improve your health. These small shifts, done consistently, are powerful.
They build the foundation for energy, clarity, hormone balance, and the ability to age with intention and grace.
So this August, I invite you to choose one or two habits from this list and commit to them for the next 30 days. See how you feel. Your future self will thank you.
