Hello and welcome! I am Dr. Monique May, a board-certified and licensed family physician with over twenty years of clinical experience. A native New Yorker, I have called Charlotte, NC home for most of the past twenty-three years. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology, I obtained my medical degree with honors from Temple University School of Medicine, and completed my internship and residency in Family Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center (now Atrium) in Charlotte, NC, where I was named Resident of the Year. Most recently I completed a Masters of Healthcare Administration at the George Washington University School of Public Health. My commitment to community service was recently recognized with a Physician of the Year award.
With over twenty years of clinical experience, I have cared for entire families, from newborns to the elderly in a variety of settings. From running my own clinic and working in hospitals, worksites, patient homes, urgent care centers, and via telemedicine, I have provided high-quality, cost-effective healthcare to thousands of patients in over two-plus decades of clinical practice. My expertise has led to me being quoted in several national news and lifestyle outlets and being interviewed on local news and radio outlets as well. I now enjoy an administrative and consulting career. I am also a published author of two books, MealMasters: Your Simple Guide to Modern Day Meal Planning, and my new plant-based cookbook, Doc, Fix My Plate! The Physician In The Kitchen’s Prescriptions for Your Healthy Meal Makeover.
All of my accomplishments aside, losing my grandmother suddenly to complications of a stroke and high blood pressure was one of the darkest times of my life. Despite the distance between us (she was in Alabama, I grew up in New York), she and I were very close, and I loved eating her homemade “sweet bread” (a plain yellow cake) she would ship to me. I have fond and cherished memories of visiting her as a little girl and spending time with her in the kitchen. I truly believe my love of cooking and sharing food stems from the example she set for me.
In my precious spare time, I enjoy cooking and experimenting in my kitchen (affectionately referred to as my “lab”), and take delight in sharing my food and helpful and healthy cooking tips with others. Also known as the “Physician in the Kitchen™”, I am known for my delicious food and cooking skills. I like preparing healthy meals and look forward to teaching others how to meal plan and prep efficiently. I also enjoy teaching others how to plant-based their pantry. I take delight in spending time with my family, cheering on my beloved North Carolina Tarheels, watching cooking shows on television, creating new recipes, traveling, exercising, reading, mentoring, and shopping for the latest and greatest kitchen gadgets. See you in the kitchen!
